The Museum Es Baluard

The museum of modern and contemporary art in Palma was inaugurated in 2004 by the Spanish royal couple.
Baluard means fortress in Mallorcan. This building was constructed in the 16th century by the Italian military engineer Captain Fratin.
The museum is divided into 3 levels, connected to the outside by the Renaissance wall and to the inside by ramps, skylights and large balconies. The museum was designed in 2003 and the total area of the complex is about 5,000 square meters.
During construction, workers discovered a huge tank in the basement with a capacity of 3 million liters of water. This water comes from the spring "Font de la Villa", located ten kilometers north of Palma. It was used in the 17th century to supply the population of the lower part of the city.
Today, the space is used for events, dinners, music concerts, exhibition halls, etc..

Es Baluard is managed by the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Consell Insular de Mallorca, Palma City Council and the Fundació de Art Serra.

The art collections of this museum consist of works by artists associated with international trends since the beginning of the 19th century, such as Anglada-Camarasa, Joan Miró, Picasso, Joaquín Sorolla, Antoni Tapies, Miquel Barceló and others. In addition to the permanent collections, there are temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

Three Graces in Blue (1993) - three interconnected plexiglass containers. They are supported by a steel construction by the German artist Rebecca Horn (1944 - Michelstadt).

Do not leave Es Baluard without visiting its terraces. They have one of the best views of the city. From there you can see the Cathedral, Almudaina Palace, the Port of Palma, Bellver Castle and much more. Follow my advice, experience counts!

What else can you find in this museum? An excellent bookstore with books on art and contemporary thought, magazines, catalogs and very original gifts.

Es Baluard can be used for events or celebrations.
