Majorcan Gastronomy at Easter

Chocolate is the star of Holy Week in many countries around the world. However, here in Mallorca the tradition goes a bit further than the well-known and delicious chocolate rabbit.

In Catalonia, Murcia, Valencia and Castilla la Mancha, for example, bakeries prepare the "Easter Mona", which is similar to a sweet bread decorated with sweets, figurines, etc. This bread has a crown shape. Another interesting thing is that in Catalonia the confectioners work a lot with chocolate, making fantastic edible sculptures.

Look how beautiful and creative are the Easter monas made by Jaime, pastry chef at Patisseria Can Massana in Solsona, Lleida, Spain. They are mouth-watering works of art!

And what is it like in Mallorca?

Here families celebrate this date in a rather peculiar way, that is, by getting together to cook empanadas, cocarrois, rubiols, crespells that will then be tasted at lunches or during an outdoor walk. The Monday after Easter Sunday here on the island is a holiday. So people take the opportunity to picnic and welcome spring together with relatives and friends.

You will be able to identify these delicacies through the photos by Uli Fuchs:

Empanada - has a round shape and a very delicate finish. It is made with wheat flour, lard, water, egg, orange juice, and salt. The filling can be lamb, fish, or pork accompanied by peas, onions, leeks, raisins, leftovers, and bacon that are seasoned with olive oil, red pepper powder, and salt. All this well chopped stuff is introduced into the empanada before it goes into the oven. Each person chooses his or her favorite recipe out of so many options.

There is already a vegan version, which means that the dough is made with whole wheat flour, water, and olive oil. The filling can be made with cauliflower, red bell pepper, raisins, peas, leeks, olive oil, red bell pepper powder, and salt. It is super tasty.

Cocarrois - the dough recipe is identical to the empanada. What changes is the shape and the filling. The latter can be a mixture of spinach, chard, raisins, parsley, and red bell pepper powder. The vegan version is very popular.

Apart from all these delicacies, Majorcan's also enjoy cod, salmon and many other fish and seafood during the Holy Week.

Again this year, due to the coronavirus, the processions are still cancelled.
