Carrer Morei - The gift street in Palma - part 1

Time is changing with an incredible speed but in my opinion there are things that you do out of instinct when you are traveling such as buy gifts to friends, family or yourself.

Sometimes desire to buy appears and you don’t know when you’re coming back to this place.

For those moments and by coincidence if you are in Palma de Mallorca I will give you tips about two shops that are situated in the center of the city in Carrer (street) D’en Morei that called my attention.

By the way this street is near Santa Eulalia’s Square and Carrer de L’Almudaina. It is a must-see landmark for anyone who is visiting the Palma’s Center.

Let us go by parts:

The first shop is called Cachivache. This word means junk. Aside from that it is a homage to the Little Mermaid, a film that everybody enjoyed. There is a moment in this film that the main character asked a seagull the name of a fork and it answered : junk!

This shop was opened in 1995 - almost 25 years ago - by the partners Angelika Zacherl and Petra Rechenauer. They are from Munich. They met each other when they were working in a hotel in Fuerteventura, a canary Island from Spain.

They decided to invest in Mallorca opening one of the first gift shops in the touristic Carrer D’en Morei.

What things does Cachivache offer?

According to Angelika, many personal things such as:

Artisan’s fans that are made with wood from nuts, hazelnuts, apples or pears. They are painted by hand in limited editions. They can be combined with sarongs or scarfs, according to the season of the year.

I enjoyed the models with butterflies, bicycles, flowers, etc.

Meanwhile, the most requested fan is “Flamenco”. Italian and Russian tourists are the main customers.

-Jewellery and leather bags are made by hand also.

Cachivache has a huge range of hats that are made with 100% vegetable fibre and they are from Ecuador. They are the famous Panamá hats.

Angelika told me that they are made by hand with Toquilla, a kind of straw. They require elaborated work. There is a band inside of the hat that helps the user fit it on the head, if necessary.

There are natural soaps including a blend that is made with extra-virgin olive oil as its main ingredient aside from shea butter.

If you want to perfume your house with an excellent air freshener, ask for The Bouquet’s or take the lavanda’s sachets that are made with caress in Mallorca.

If you want to send an original post-card about the main touristic points of Mallorca, don’t worry because in Cachivache you will find it.

Angelika enjoys to decore her shop with flowers. They seem real and they are being sold.

Crossing the street, almost in front of Cachivache is another store: Típika.

Four years ago the members decided to assemble it with very interesting Majorcan articles. Petra is there.

In the next Elianas Blog I will talk about this interesting place!
